Spanish windmill makers tilt overseas
Madrid (AFP) Sept 28, 2010
Spain's economic crisis is sucking the air out of the windmill business. Once a booming sector of the Spanish energy industry, manufacturers now face an uncertain outlook for demand and state subsidies, industry leaders say. Increasingly, windmill manufacturers are tilting for business in countries such as Scotland, China and Brazil. Floating ocean wind turbines proposed
College Park, Md. (UPI) Jun 30, 2010
Wind turbines as a renewable energy source have problems of noise, visual clutter and land use, and one U.S. researcher says moving them offshore is a solution. Offshore wind farms have been built, but only in shallow water near coasts, and one naval architect wants to go much farther out by placing turbines on floating platforms, a release from the American Institute of Physics said We ... more

China to dominate wind power
Berlin (UPI) Jun 15, 2010
China is quickly developing into the world's biggest wind power market. The Asian giant in 2009 installed more wind turbines than all of Europe and by 2017 could have the world's largest total capacity, said Angelika Pullen, spokeswoman for the Global Wind Energy Council, an industry group. China in 2009 installed 13 gigawatts of new wind power capacity, compared to 10 GW in Euro ... more

Wind turbines set out to conquer Sweden's great north
Markbygden, Sweden (AFP) June 13, 2010
While community opposition often blocks or hampers new wind power projects, Sweden has managed to break ground for Europe's largest wind park counting more than 1,000 giant turbines, with barely a whisper of protest. The secret? The giant Markbygden wind farm - covering more than 500 square kilometres, or the equivalent of five times the size of Paris - is being built in a virtually uninhabited, desolate stretch of Sweden's great north. "If I were to try the same thing in Germany, it would tak ... read more
