Wind could provide 20 pct of world power by 2030: study
Beijing (AFP) Oct 12, 2010
Wind power could meet about a fifth of the world's electricity demand within 20 years, an industry group and environmental watchdog Greenpeace predicted in a new report released Tuesday. The global market for wind power grew 41.7 percent on year in 2009, beating average annual growth of 28.6 percent over the past 13 years, said Steve Sawyer, secretary general of the Global Wind Energy Council, or GWEC. China ranked second in the world in installed wind generating capacity in 2009 and was the lar ... read more

German wind growth down, exports strong
Berlin (UPI) Jul 30, 2010
The German wind energy industry dominates global export numbers, but at home, turbine installations are slowing down. An unusually long and harsh winter has slowed down wind power growth in Germany, Hermann Albers, the president of the German Wind Energy Association, said Thursday in Berlin. Installed capacity grew by 660 megawatts in the first half of this year, down from aroun ... more

Study Shows Stability And Utility Of Floating Wind Turbines
College Park MD (SPX) Jul 06, 2010
Wind turbines may be one of the best renewable energy solutions, but as turbines get larger they also get noisier, become more of an eyesore, and require increasingly larger expanses of land. One solution: ocean-based wind turbines. While offshore turbines already have been constructed, they've traditionally been situated in shallow waters, where the tower extends directly into the seabed. ... more

Professor To Present Vision For A Zero-Carbon Future
Nottingham UK (SPX) Jun 15, 2010
A University of Nottingham professor is to outline his vision for a UK powered completely by renewable energy by 2030 in an open lecture taking place later this month. Professor Seamus Garvey, of the University's Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, will speak on the potential of vast floating offshore 'energy farms' off the UK coastline, which could produce 'green' electricity at a fraction of the cost of its nearest competitors. Professor Garvey said: "Imagine ... read more
