![]() Berlin (UPI) Jun 15, 2010 China is quickly developing into the world's biggest wind power market. The Asian giant in 2009 installed more wind turbines than all of Europe and by 2017 could have the world's largest total capacity, said Angelika Pullen, spokeswoman for the Global Wind Energy Council, an industry group. China in 2009 installed 13 gigawatts of new wind power capacity, compared to 10 GW in Europe and 9.9 GW in the United States, figures from the GWEC indicate. "From 2005 on, China each year doub ... read more |

Cape Wind gets green light![]() After nearly a decadelong permitting path, the Obama administration has approved the United States' first offshore wind farm. The 130-turbine Cape Wind project, to be located in federal waters of Nantucket Sound off Massachusetts, is expected to meet 75 percent of the total electricity demand of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island. "This will be the first of many pro ... more Germany launches push into offshore wind ![]() The blades began turning on Germany's first offshore wind farm this week - the starting signal for the construction of hundreds of additional sea-based turbines. Erected 28 miles off the North Sea coast, the Alpha Ventus farm consists of 12 wind turbines - each nearly as high as the Washington Monument - that are to generate enough power for nearly 50,000 households. German utilitie ... more Proposed Wind Power Grid To Make Wind Power More Reliable ![]() The energy needs of the entire human population could potentially be met by converting wind energy to electricity by means of wind turbines. While offshore wind power resources are abundant, wind turbines are currently unable to provide steady power due to natural fluctuations in wind direction and strength. However, offshore wind power output can be made more consistent by choosing projec ... more |

![]() Berlin (AFP) March 22, 2010 Sound pollution from offshore wind turbines poses a threat to Baltic Sea porpoises, a German marine mammal specialist said on Monday. "It was highlighted that wind turbines are so noisy that the harbour porpoises in the Baltic Sea are threatened," Harald Benke, the director of Germany's Sea Museum, told AFP. "There are methods to reduce the noise. They are costly but allow the considerable reduction of volume of noise produced by the wind turbines, which threaten at least that population" of mar ... read more |
