Norway plans the world's most powerful wind turbine
Oslo (AFP) Feb 12, 2010
Norway plans to build the world's most powerful wind turbine, hoping the new technology will increase the profitability of costly offhsore wind farms, partners behind the project said Friday. With a rotor diametre of 145 metres (475 feet), the 10-megawatt protype will be roughly three times more powerful than ordinary wind turbines currently in place, Enova, a public agency owned by Norway's petroleum and oil industry ministry, said. The world's largest wind turbine, 162.5 metres (533 feet) tall ... read more

China scraps limits on foreign wind turbine parts
Beijing (AFP) Jan 12, 2010
China has scrapped restrictions on the use of foreign parts in wind power turbines, state media reported, as the nation seeks access to more advanced technology to meet its clean energy targets. The decision by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) means wind farms in China no longer have to source at least 70 percent of turbine parts from the domestic market, the China Busin ... more

Britain grants licences for huge offshore wind farm expansion
London (AFP) Jan 8, 2010
Britain granted licences Friday for a huge expansion of offshore wind farms, based around nine sites which together could provide enough electricity for almost all homes in the country, officials said. Foreign firms including Germany's Eon and RWE, Norway's Statoil, Portugal's EDP and Sweden's Vattenfall won bids to develop the coastal sites which have the potential for 6,400 additional turb ... more

Nantucket Sound wind farm setback
Boston (UPI) Jan 8, 2009
A plan to build the United States' largest offshore wind farm in Nantucket Sound, Mass., has suffered another setback after nine years of environmental and political arguments. Energy Management Inc.'s proposed Cape Wind $1 billion wind farm would cover 24 square miles -- an area roughly the size of Manhattan -- in the sound. But the National Park Service Monday announced that ... more

AGL Energy doubts massive wind project
Sydney (UPI) Dec 24, 2009
AGL Energy expressed doubt about the future of its proposed $800 million wind farm in Victoria because of a collapse in the price of Australia's renewable energy certificates. The value of the certificates, aimed at encouraging investment in renewable energy, has almost halved since the Australian government began issuing them to consumers who install solar hot water systems and other products that do not generate power. The 350-megawatt wind farm, with a planned 150 turbines nearly 300 ... read more
