Antarctica wind farm operational
Auckland, New Zealand (UPI) Jan 20, 2009
The world's southernmost wind farm, in Antarctica, is now operational. The Ross Island wind farm will supply about 11 percent of the power to New Zealand's Scott Base and the American McMurdo Station. Previously, the two sites relied on diesel-powered generators for electricity. The wind farm will cut diesel consumption by about 463,000 liters a year and reduce carbon dioxide output by 1,370 tons annually, according to New Zealand-based Meridian Energy, the project's developer. ... read more

Britain grants licences for huge offshore wind farm expansion
London (AFP) Jan 8, 2010
Britain granted licences Friday for a huge expansion of offshore wind farms, based around nine sites which together could provide enough electricity for almost all homes in the country, officials said. Foreign firms including Germany's Eon and RWE, Norway's Statoil, Portugal's EDP and Sweden's Vattenfall won bids to develop the coastal sites which have the potential for 6,400 additional turbines generating 32 gigawatts. This would be enough "to supply nearly all the homes in the UK, ... read more

Maine readies for offshore wind power
Augusta, Maine (UPI) Dec 18, 2009
Maine has selected three Atlantic Ocean sites for prototype wind turbines. Gov. John Baldacci and researchers estimate that the state's offshore energy potential is equivalent to 100 nuclear plants. The Tuesday announcement positions Maine to become the first U.S. state to create offshore wind test and demonstration sites. "This is where the future lies. We want to become an energy generating center," Baldacci said during a news conference to announce the sites. Baldacci's goa ... read more
