First German offshore wind farm online
Bremerhaven, Germany (UPI) Aug 14, 2009
A year late and roughly $85 million over budget, Germany's first offshore wind farm Alpha Ventus has now gone online. The first three of the farm's 12 5MW wind turbines began supplying electricity to the national grid Wednesday, the company said. Towering 328 feet above the rocky North Sea, they represent Germany's hopes for clean power generation from sea-born wind. The remaining nine ... read more

Keeping Our Sights On Big Breakers With Radar
Geesthacht, Germany (SPX) Aug 17, 2009
Scientists of the Geesthacht GKSS Research Centre have developed a radar system with which it is possible to study the behaviour of sea waves. This technology will be used immediately on the North Sea on the FINO3 research platform in order to determine the interactions between offshore wind power machines and swells. The location of the FINO3 research platforms, the "Dan Tysk" sand bank ... more

Wind Energy On The NSW South Coast
Gerroa, Australia (SPX) Aug 03, 2009
Wind farming is opening up an entirely new revenue source for family farms throughout the region, with ideal locations around Kiama, Milton and south to Eden and the border. If fully developed, wind farming could be the biggest economic opportunity the South Coast has seen since the advent of the motorcar and weekend tourism. But it requires the cooperation of government at all levels to clear the way and provide the planning and financial environment that will underpin a rapid uptake in wind energy developments. ... more

    Vietnam's high wind power potential
Hanoi, Vietnam (UPI) Jul 30, 2009
Vietnam has more wind energy potential than Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, experts say. A World Bank survey says Vietnam has the capacity to produce 513,360 megawatts of wind power annually. That translates into 200 times the output of Southeast Asia's largest power plant, the Son La Hydroelectric Plant in northern Vietnam, reports the VietNamNet Bridge news site. Vietnam's renewa ... more

    Wind power reaching southern Germany
Hamburg, Germany (UPI) Jul 8, 2009
Germany is one of the world's largest wind power markets, but there is room for significant further onshore growth in the country's southern states. Traveling by train through Schleswig-Holstein means seeing a lot of vast space and wind turbines. Situated between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, the sparsely populated German state houses nearly 2,600 turbines with a total capacity of ... more
